I’ve been in South Africa many times and for the first time I’ve decided to visit Sterkfontein caves.

An hour drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, Sterkfontein (declared a World Heritage Site in year 2000) is a South African National Heritage Site in a huge area called the Cradle of Humankind.
The cave is open 7 days a week, all tours are guided and run every half an hour from 9am to 4pm, and the tour are limited to 30 people maximum.
I suggest you to visit the caves in the morning because there are less people and cause of this it’s so much better! Inside the cave there’re about 16° degrees, but you don’t need to wear a sweater unless you’re a very chilly person, like me, and I wasn’t wearing a sweater!!!

Before watching a beautiful video about my visit to the caves 🙂 it’s time for a few informations about history and archeology. The Sterkfontein Caves are one of the richest and most productive palaeo-anthropological sites in the world. The first fossils at Sterkfontein came to light as early as 1936 and were the first adult Australopithecines or more specifically Australopithecus.

The full tour takes about one hour, in the first part you can visit the museum where you can see the explanation of the man evolution, then you walk till the cave entrance.
The cave is very dark, so I found very difficult to take a lot of pictures different from a black screen!!! In some parts you need to walk lowered and be careful where you put your feets. But don’t worry, it’s not a cave where you have to crouch down and move like a marine squeezed into the rocks. The smallest part was like 1 meter x 1 meter.

The experience is amazing and the cave is absolutely beautiful, the guide was very kind and she explained the story very well.
When you exit to the caves you have a path through the park to come back to the office point.
At the entrance you’re going to find a bar where you can have a snack, a delicious coffee and obviously the restrooms.
And what else? Ops the video, I was almost forgetting it :-))  Watch my video of the visit to Sterkfontein Caves here below!
Enjoy!!! And tell me what do you think in the comments here below!   :-))))
